Sophie stepped onto the porch, her shoes crunching on gravel as she squinted at the strange new neighborhood. Everything felt loud and too bright, so different from the quiet Canadian woods she missed so much.
"I just want to go home," she whispered, glancing at her mother, who was busy directing the movers and trying to sound cheerful.
Sophie stared out at the garden, feeling a pang of homesickness. She missed her old friends, the snowy mornings, and the cozy warmth of her old house. Everything in Australia felt too new, too strange, and she wondered if she’d ever feel at home.
"Why did we have to move so far away?" she murmured, fighting back tears as she listened to the distant hum of cicadas.
Emily, a tiny, fluffy puppy with expressive brown eyes and oversized ears, peeks out, her nose twitching with curiosity. Sophie kneels down, reaching out gently.
"Hello! Are you lost?" Sophie asked, surprised when the puppy tilted her head and replied.
"No, I'm just looking for a friend! My name is Emily," the puppy said, her voice soft and cheerful.
Sophie felt her loneliness begin to fade as Emily became her secret companion. They explored every corner of the garden, inventing wild stories and chasing butterflies. Sophie knew she’d found something truly special, but she worried what her mum would think.
"We'll always be best friends, Sophie," Emily promised one afternoon, her tail wagging happily.
Mum, a tall woman with kind eyes and a gentle smile, stared at Emily, her face pale with surprise.
"Did that puppy just talk?" she gasped, clutching the doorframe. Sophie rushed to explain, her voice trembling with hope.
"Please, Mum, she's my friend and she's special! I promise she's not scary,"
"Well, maybe having a talking puppy isn't so bad," Mum finally admits, smiling at Sophie.
"I'm happy to be part of your family," Emily says, her tail thumping softly. Together, they settle into their new home, their hearts full of love and belonging.
