Eli, a wiry boy with stunted growth and a quick wit, grins at his baby brother’s crib, his mind whirring with ideas. He tugs on a fresh diaper and pulls on a onesie, glancing at the mirror, trying to mimic the innocent expressions of his younger sibling. His baby brother, Jamie, giggles, clapping his chubby hands as if approving the plan.
"Just for today, we switch places. You get to be the big kid, and I’ll play baby. Mom won’t suspect a thing!"
Eli is nestled among the infants, bottle in hand, while Jamie toddles around with surprising confidence. Caregivers fuss over Eli, cooing and soothing him, while Jamie blends seamlessly into activities he shouldn’t understand. Eli tries to keep up the act, giggling and babbling, but feels a strange sense of unease as his brother speaks less and less, seeming to forget the prank.
"Jamie, remember, you’re supposed to be me!"
Mom cradles Eli, gently rocking him while Jamie sits upright in the corner, quietly stacking blocks. Mom fusses over Eli, checking his diaper and preparing a warm bottle. Eli feels the boundaries blur, his protests muffled as his mother’s routine becomes more tender, almost treating him younger than Jamie.
"Oh, Eli, you’re such a sweet baby tonight,"
Eli tries to speak up, but his words come out as incoherent babbles. He reaches for Jamie, seeking reassurance, but Jamie simply waves and toddles away. Eli feels helpless, his attempts to break the spell only deepening his predicament. The world seems to shrink, everything becoming oversized and unfamiliar.
"Mom, I’m not really a baby..."
Eli surrenders, unable to fight the transformation. He gazes up at his mother, feeling her warmth and the soft rhythm of her heartbeat. Jamie plays in the background, fully embracing his new role as the older brother. The house is quiet except for the gentle lull of nursery sounds.
"Shhh, little one. You’re safe now,"
Eli accepts his new existence, unable to escape the babyhood he once mocked. His mother’s care is constant, Jamie’s independence growing stronger each day. The toys, crib, and lullabies surround him, anchoring him to a life he never meant to choose. The world outside his nursery fades, and Eli finds comfort in the softness and simplicity of his new world.
