Leo notices a fluffy, caramel-colored dog following closely behind, her floppy ears bouncing with each enthusiastic step. Her tail wags so vigorously that her entire body wiggles with joy. "Hey there, girl," Leo says, crouching down to meet her gaze. The dog's tongue lolls out as she licks his face, making him giggle. "You're so sweet! Like sugar," he declares, naming her Sugar.
Leo feels a pang of worry about Sugar wandering off. Approaching his teacher, Ms. Evans, he explains the situation. "There's a dog following me, and I'm worried about her," he says. Ms. Evans makes a call to see if anyone has reported a missing dog, but there are no matches. After school, Leo finds Sugar waiting for him, her tail wagging with excitement.
"We can't just keep a dog we found!" Mom protests, her voice firm yet understanding. Leo pleads, "But she's so sweet, and she was all alone!" Relenting, Mom agrees to put up posters and check online for any claims. Leo is thrilled and spends the afternoon playing with Sugar, teaching her tricks in the sun-drenched backyard.
Sugar dashes about, chasing squirrels and barking at birds, her joy infectious. Suddenly, a car backfires loudly, and Sugar bolts, fear driving her faster than Leo has ever seen. "Sugar! Sugar, come back!" he calls, his voice tinged with panic. His heart races as he searches frantically, asking passersby if they have seen a caramel-colored dog with floppy ears.
Tears threaten to spill as Leo retraces his steps, calling out for Sugar in a voice hoarse with emotion. The realization hits him hard—he feels like he has failed her, doubts about his ability to be a good dog owner creeping in. The world around him blurs, and he vows not to give up until he finds her.
There, huddled and trembling, is Sugar. Her eyes light up as she sees Leo, her tail wagging weakly. Leo drops to his knees, wrapping his arms around her. "I'm so sorry, Sugar," he whispers, relief and gratitude flooding his voice. Together, they walk home, Leo promising to always keep her safe.
