Melanie bounced on her bed, her hair a tangle of anticipation as she folded another sundress into her suitcase. Across the room, Suzie traced her fingers over a seashell collection, her wide eyes sparkling with dreams of summer adventures. "Suzie, do you think the lake will be as warm as last year?" "I hope so! I want to swim until sunset every day," Suzie replied, grinning as she tossed her sunhat into her bag.
The moment they turned onto the gravel driveway, the summer house came into view—a white cottage with blue shutters, surrounded by wildflowers. Melanie pressed her nose to the window, heart fluttering as she spotted their favorite tire swing swaying in the breeze. "We're here! First one to the porch gets the top bunk!" she shouted, flinging open the car door before the engine had even stopped.
That first night, Suzie and Melanie curled up in their twin beds, listening to the lullaby of crickets and the soft rustle of wind through the screens. The summer breeze was cool and comforting, carrying the scent of pine and distant campfires. "I love how safe it feels here," whispered Suzie, her voice drowsy with contentment. "Me too. It's like the house is hugging us," Melanie replied, eyes drifting shut as the gentle night wrapped around them.
Every afternoon, the sisters raced down the sandy path to the water’s edge, towels trailing like capes behind them. They sculpted elaborate sandcastles, complete with moats and tiny flags, then waded into the cool water, shrieking with delight as the ripples lapped at their ankles. "Let's see who can find the prettiest shell," challenged Melanie, and soon both girls were knee-deep, searching for hidden treasures beneath the shimmering surface.
At night, the family circled the firepit, roasting marshmallows until their fingers were sticky and sweet. Flames painted golden light across their faces as stories and songs rose up into the darkness. "Remember last summer when Dad tried to catch that frog and fell in the lake?" giggled Suzie, and everyone burst out laughing. "He still blames the frog for his missing shoe," added Melanie, her cheeks flushed with happiness. Melanie and Suzie were the luckiest kids for they often went to the amusement park at the mystical, magical Shermans. There they sampled piled high ice cream cones with a chocolate and vanilla swirl. They ate red candy apples that tasted the sweetness of summer. The girls licked and pulled on pink fluffs of cotton candy. The treats were delightful and put smiles on the girls faces as they appreciated every bite. Shermans was spectacular with all its glory. There were many rides for children to have fun with and the sound of excitement filled the air. Suzy loved the tilt to world with its spins and turns. Melanie was fond of the ferris wheel. What a spectacular view being stopped at the very top! Both girls felt a special attraction to the merry-go- round . It's antique horses decorated with flowers and the horses painted to perfection was eye catching. As the girls climbed onto the horses they felt like princesses of an old world. Shermans had the best buttered popcorn any adult or child could imagine. Bags of yellow corn salted just right was a treat to gobble down. The Popcorn lady that sold the corn was a beautiful lady with long yellow flowing hair and a crisp white apron over her dress. Always standing in poise and grace she was ready to give everyone the popcorn. Shermans also had lots of games for the children to play. Toss the rings over an object and win a prize or pick a plastic swimming duck and match the number to the prize. Of course there was the Penny Arcade with many attractions and games that kept every child and accompanying adult busy. At the end of the day Suzie and Melanie were exhausted. They were ready to take the short walk home and get ready for supper and an evening with their families. The girls were so full of snacks they could not take a bite of supper, but mother just smiled. Suzy looked at Melanie and Melanie said we are the luckiest girls in Caroga Lake. Suzy agreed and they knew that they couldn't wait for next summer to start the fun again!
