Eli, a small boy with tousled brown hair and gentle eyes, watches the other kids play tag. He hugs his knees to his chest, glancing now and then at the happy groups but never joining in. The wind rustles the leaves above him, and a single red ball rolls to a stop by his feet, but no one comes to fetch it.
Sunny, a golden retriever puppy with fluffy fur and bright, curious eyes, peeks out from the greenery. His tail wags uncertainly, muddy but hopeful. Eli crouches down, smiling for the first time that day. "Hey, little guy. Are you lost?"
"Woof!" Sunny barks, licking Eli's hand. Eli laughs, feeling the warmth of companionship for the first time in a while. "You can be my friend, Sunny. We’ll never have to be alone again."
Eli teaches Sunny new tricks, and in return, Sunny helps Eli find courage. "Let’s try the big slide together, Sunny!" With a wagging tail, Sunny leads the way, and laughter rings out across the playground.
Maya, a girl with pigtails and a friendly smile, steps forward. "Is that your dog? He looks really fun!" Eli hesitates, but Sunny nudges his hand. "His name is Sunny. Do you want to play with us?" Soon, a circle of new friends gathers, tossing balls and laughing with Sunny.
Eli looks at Sunny, gratitude shining in his eyes. "Thank you, Sunny. You helped me find friends when I needed one the most." Sunny cuddles close, his tail thumping a happy rhythm as laughter fills the evening air.
