Jason curiously eyed the contraption, a tangled mess of wires and blinking lights their father had warned them about. Kitty was more interested in the pile of old comic books strewn across the floor. "Come on, Kitty, just one peek!" Jason urged, his eyes gleaming with mischief.
"Fine, but if we get caught, it's your fault," Kitty replied, rolling her eyes. As they leaned closer, the machine suddenly roared to life, a blinding flash enveloping them both.
Jason blinked, trying to shake off the dizziness, only to find himself staring at his own face. Kitty, in Jason's body, gaped back at him. "Whoa, what just happened?" Jason exclaimed, his voice sounding strangely high-pitched.
"I think... we're in each other's bodies," Kitty replied, touching her—now his—face in disbelief.
Kitty, now in Jason's body, struggled to navigate his schedule, attracting curious glances from classmates. Jason, in Kitty's body, was equally bewildered, trying to remember her friends' names. "How do you deal with all these people staring?" Kitty muttered under her breath.
"You're telling me! I have to remember all your friends and their drama," Jason shot back, awkwardly attempting to mimic Kitty's walk.
Their mother served dinner with a warm smile, oblivious to the turmoil her children were experiencing. "How was school today, you two?" she asked, her voice full of genuine interest.
Kitty hesitated, glancing at Jason for guidance. "It was... different," Jason replied, trying to sound nonchalantly like Kitty.
Jason fiddled with the controls, a determined look on his face. Kitty held a flashlight, illuminating the tangled wires. "There has to be a way to reverse this," Jason muttered.
"We just need to figure out which button did this," Kitty said, her voice laced with urgency. They exchanged hopeful glances, ready to tackle the mess together.
Jason laughed aloud, relief washing over him. Kitty joined in, their laughter echoing through the cluttered space. "I can't believe we actually did it," he said, grinning widely.
"Let's never do that again," Kitty replied, shaking her head but smiling nonetheless. They stood up, brushing off the dust, and headed upstairs, leaving the machine and their peculiar adventure behind.
