Taylor bolted upright in bed, her green eyes wide with panic as her gaze landed on the empty spot where her microphone should have been. She ruffled her blonde hair, heart racing, and scanned every corner of her messy room.
"It has to be here somewhere—my audition’s in three hours!" Her voice trembled as she scrambled out of bed and began searching beneath piles of clothes and stacks of books.
Taylor darted from room to room, checking the kitchen table, the living room sofa, and even behind the television. Her mother looked up from her coffee, brow furrowed with concern.
"Mom, have you seen my microphone? The silver one with the blue stripe?" Her mother shook her head sympathetically, but offered encouragement. "Don’t worry, honey. You’ll find it. Maybe retrace your steps from yesterday?"
Taylor paused, trying to recall the previous day. She remembered practicing her song under the old oak tree and laughing with her best friend as they improvised silly lyrics. Her eyes widened as a memory flickered—she’d set the microphone down near the garden before running back inside.
"Maybe I left it outside," she murmured, determination sharpening her features as she hurried toward the garden.
Taylor knelt by the garden, hands searching the cool earth and uprooted grass. She spotted something metallic glinting beneath a fallen leaf—her microphone, partially buried and a little muddy.
"There you are! I can’t believe I almost lost you," she exclaimed, relief flooding her voice. She wiped the microphone with her sleeve, cradling it as if it were made of gold.
Taylor stood backstage, gripping her recovered microphone tightly. Her hands shook, but she took a deep breath, focusing on the familiar weight in her palm. When her name was called, she stepped into the spotlight, her heart pounding but her voice steady.
"This is for everyone who’s ever lost something important—and found the courage to keep searching," she said, her green eyes shining.
Taylor sang her heart out, pouring her relief and determination into every lyric. When she finished, the silence broke into thunderous applause, and she beamed, clutching her microphone close.
"Thank you," she whispered, knowing that her journey had made her performance unforgettable.
