Tevin sat quietly on the wooden steps, his small hands resting on his knees and his blue eyes looking distant. His blonde hair shimmered in the sunlight, but his usual cheerful demeanor was clouded with worry.
Cayly came skipping up the path, her backpack bouncing with each step. Her own blonde hair danced in the breeze, and her smile was as bright as the day itself when she spotted her little brother.
"Hey Tevin, why do you look so sad?" she asked, her voice filled with concern.
"The doctor told Mom I need to give my blood to someone, and I'm scared," replied Tevin, his voice barely a whisper.
Cayly sat down beside Tevin, wrapping her arm around his small shoulders. "It's okay to be scared, Tevin," she said gently. "But it's just a little pinch. You can sit on Mom or Dad's lap, and I'll be right there with you. You can even squeeze my hand if you want."
Tevin looked up at her, his eyes a little less worried. "Really? It won't hurt much?"
"Just a tiny pinch," she reassured him. "And your body will make more blood. The doctor just wants to make sure you're healthy."
The gentle hum of the car engine was soothing, and Tevin leaned against his mom, feeling a little braver with each passing moment.
"You know, Tevin," Cayly said, looking out the window at the passing lights, "sometimes we have to do hard things, but that's how we become strong."
Tevin nodded, her words giving him a newfound sense of courage.
Tevin sat in a big lab chair on his mom's lap, his fingers entwined with Cayly's hand. The lab assistant smiled warmly at him, explaining each step with a cheerful tone.
"Remember, you can do hard things," Cayly whispered, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze before the needle pricked his arm.
Tevin took a deep breath, feeling the pinch, but it wasn't as bad as he had imagined.
Tevin felt a rush of pride as he stepped back into the cool evening air.
"I did it! It wasn't so bad," he exclaimed, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
"I knew you could," Cayly replied, her own smile wide with pride for her brother.
Together, they made their way home, hearts light and spirits high, knowing that Tevin's brave day had ended on a happy note.
