Nicholas tugged on his sneakers, his face bright with anticipation. At his side, Hank, a shaggy golden retriever with a tail that never seemed to stop wagging, spun in excited circles.
"Ready for an adventure, Hank?"
"Woof!" barked Hank, already nosing at the door.
Hank spotted the squirrel first, his nose twitching with excitement. Without warning, he lunged forward, barking joyfully, and Nicholas was quick to follow, laughter bubbling from his lips.
"Wait for me, Hank! That squirrel is fast!"
The squirrel led the pair on a wild chase, darting through flowerbeds and over garden stones, its tail flicking in the sunlight.
Nicholas's heart pounded with excitement as he stumbled after Hank, deeper and deeper into the woods. The air smells of earth and pine, and the sounds of home grow faint behind them.
"Woof woof!" called Hank, bounding over roots and sniffing at every patch of moss.
"Hank, where are we?" Nicholas asked, suddenly realizing how unfamiliar everything looked.
Nicholas's excitement fades, replaced by a knot of worry in his stomach. He glances around, searching for a familiar landmark, but every tree looks the same.
"I think we're lost, Hank," he whispers, his voice trembling just a little.
"Woof," says Hank, pressing close to his boy, his warm fur a comfort in the growing gloom.

Hank circles around Nicholas, his nostrils flaring as he picks up the scent of home—the honeysuckle by the back gate, the scent of cut grass, distant but clear.
"Woof! Woof woof!" he barks, nudging Nicholas and trotting confidently in a new direction.
"You smell something, boy? Lead the way!" says Nicholas, hope lighting up his eyes as he follows Hank through the trees.
Nicholas bursts from the trees, laughing in relief as Hank trots proudly at his side, tail wagging furiously. The garden glows in the late morning sun, and the squirrel, safe in a tree, watches the pair with bright eyes.
"We made it, Hank! You’re the best dog in the world," Nicholas exclaims, hugging his loyal companion tight.
"Woof!" replies Hank, thumping his tail against the grass and licking Nicholas's cheek, happy to be home after their grand adventure.
