Alan and Mary, two best friends, were exploring the far corner of the playground, a place often overlooked by their classmates. Beneath the shade of an old oak tree, they spotted a small, scruffy dog with expressive eyes that seemed to plead for companionship. "Look, Alan! It's a dog!" Mary exclaimed, her voice a mix of excitement and concern.
Alan crouched down, extending a gentle hand towards the dog. "Hey there, little guy. What's your name?" he asked softly. The dog wagged its tail tentatively, inching closer to Alan's hand.
Jumbo, as they decided to call him, seemed to understand that he had found friends in Alan and Mary. The children sat with him, sharing their sandwiches and stories about their day. "Do you think we can keep him, Alan?" Mary asked, her eyes filled with hope.
"I don't know. We'll have to talk to Miss Turner. She might know what to do," Alan replied, glancing at the school building where their teacher's window was still lit.
Alan and Mary entered hesitantly, with Jumbo trotting close behind. Miss Turner looked up, her expression softening as she noticed the dog. "Miss Turner, we found this dog during recess. We named him Jumbo. Can we keep him?" Alan asked earnestly.
Miss Turner smiled warmly, adjusting her glasses. "He seems to have taken quite a liking to you both. Let's see if anyone reports him missing. If not, we'll have a conversation with your parents," she said reassuringly.
No reports came of a missing dog, and after a heartfelt discussion with their parents, Alan and Mary were allowed to keep Jumbo. The decision brought joy to the children, who couldn't imagine their days without their new furry friend. "I can't believe we get to keep him, Alan!" Mary exclaimed, hugging Jumbo tightly.
"I know! He's part of our family now," Alan replied, ruffling Jumbo's fur affectionately.
Alan, Mary, and Jumbo played in the snow, their laughter echoing in the crisp air. "High Parked School wouldn't be the same without Jumbo," Mary said, watching as Jumbo chased after a snowball.
"He's made everything better," Alan agreed, smiling as he watched his best friend and their beloved dog play together.
Alan and Mary walked home with Jumbo trotting alongside, their hearts full of gratitude and joy. They knew that with each day, their bond with Jumbo would grow stronger, and the adventures at High Parked School would continue, filled with laughter, learning, and love.
