Dylan, the eldest of the D boys at 33, leaned against the wooden fence, a broad smile on his face as he watched his younger brothers' excitement. Denham, 16, and Donatello, 11, crouched by a small aquarium tank, their eyes wide with wonder. Inside, a tiny red slider turtle, no bigger than a quarter, paddled leisurely in the water. The boys had unanimously decided to name him Franklin Donatello.
"He's perfect, isn't he?" Denham grinned, gently tapping the glass.
"Yeah! And he's named after both of us," Donatello beamed proudly.
Dylan watched his brothers fondly, his thoughts drifting back to their old pets. Mimi, their spirited chihuahua who had passed away six years ago, had left a void in their hearts. But today felt like a new chapter, a chance to create new memories.
"You know, Mimi would have loved Franklin," Dylan mused aloud, his voice tinged with nostalgia.
"Yeah, she would have probably barked at him non-stop!" Denham chuckled, imagining the tiny dog bouncing around the tank.
Cici, their cousin who recently graduated from an HBCU, joined the brothers in the backyard. Her presence was like a breath of fresh air, bringing stories of college life and her plans to stay with the family for a while.
"I brought something for you guys," Cici announced, pulling out a small book titled "Caring for Your Turtle."
"Thanks, Cici! This is awesome!" Donatello exclaimed, thumbing through the pages eagerly.
The D boys and Cici spent the afternoon setting up an obstacle course for Franklin Donatello. With pebbles, sticks, and a small pool, they created a miniature adventure park. Laughter echoed as Franklin slowly navigated the course, his tiny legs paddling determinedly.
"Go, Franklin, go!" cheered Dylan, his voice joining the chorus of encouragement.
"He's a little explorer, just like you guys," Cici smiled, capturing the moment on her phone.
As dusk fell, the group gathered around a small fire pit, roasting marshmallows and sharing stories. The backyard buzzed with a sense of camaraderie and joy, the day’s adventures leaving everyone content and peaceful.
"Today was amazing," Denham sighed, leaning back against the grass.
"Yeah, Franklin's the best," Donatello agreed, nodding sleepily.
Dylan gazed at the sky, feeling grateful for the bond he shared with his brothers and Cici. Franklin Donatello had brought a new spark into their lives, reminding them of the joy of companionship and the promise of new beginnings.
"To new adventures," Dylan toasted, raising his mug of cocoa, a sentiment echoed by the others as the warmth of the fire wrapped around them like a comforting embrace.
