Kate rushed out of her little white cottage, her heart pounding with excitement to see Kally, her best friend. However, the usual clucking that greeted her was absent. "Kally! Where are you?" she called, scanning the barn and the empty chicken coop. The silence was unsettling, and a sense of dread crept over her.
Kate remembered the stories of the sly old fox that roamed the nearby woods. She felt a knot tighten in her stomach. "I won't let the fox get you, Kally," she vowed, her small fists clenched with determination. She needed help, and quickly set off to rally the other farm animals.
The sheepdog Max approached with a wag of his tail, sensing Kate's distress. "Let's find Kally," he barked reassuringly. The cows mooed, the pigs snorted, and even the aloof barn cat meowed her agreement. Together, they combed the farm, sniffing and searching every nook and cranny.
Kate stopped in her tracks, her eyes widening as she noticed a quiet rustling in the hay. There, nestled comfortably, was Kally, her feathers fluffed up around a clutch of eggs. "Kally! You're okay!" Kate exclaimed, relief washing over her like a gentle wave.
Kally clucked softly, her eyes warm and proud. Kate knelt beside her, understanding dawning as she saw the eggs. "You're going to be a mother," she whispered, her initial sadness giving way to admiration. Though Kate missed their games, she realized this was an important journey for Kally.
Exactly 21 days later, Kate was there when Kally emerged from the barn, surrounded by seven fluffy chicks. Their tiny peeps filled the air with joy. "They're beautiful, Kally," Kate said, her heart swelling with happiness. Together, they watched the chicks explore their world, new adventures awaiting them all.
