Allegra, a young alligator with emerald scales and bright amber eyes, sits alone at the edge of the water, careful not to let even the tip of her tail touch the bayou. She watches her siblings glide effortlessly through the shallows, hiding her nervous shivers. "I bet the water’s too cold this morning," she calls out to them, forcing a grin.
Inside, Allegra feels her heart race every time she glances at the water. Memories flicker in her mind—of a stormy night when she was just a hatchling, swept away by a sudden current and nearly drowned. Since then, the water’s gentle lapping has sounded to her like a distant, menacing drum. "If only they knew," she whispers softly, "they’d never let me live it down."
Mama Gator, wise and gentle, glances at Allegra with concern. "Come swim with us, Allegra! The water is lovely today," she beckons. Allegra hesitates, her claws digging into the mud. "Maybe later, Mama. I’m, um, watching for birds," she stammers, hoping no one notices the tremor in her voice.
Allegra stays quiet, but Mama Gator scoots closer. "You’ve been avoiding the water, haven’t you?" she asks gently. Tears prick at Allegra’s eyes. "I… I’m scared, Mama. Ever since that storm, I can’t stand the thought of going in," she admits, her voice trembling. "Oh, Allegra, you’re braver than you know. Facing your fears is the bravest thing of all," her mother replies, wrapping her tail comfortingly around her.
Mama Gator nudges her forward. "I’ll be right here with you, every step—er, paddle—of the way," she promises. Allegra closes her eyes and gingerly dips a claw into the cool water. The chill sends a jolt up her spine, but she doesn’t pull away. Slowly, she slides in, trembling, but her mother’s warmth beside her steadies her heart.
Allegra laughs for the first time in days, her fear melting away with each splash. "I did it! I’m swimming!" she cries, her eyes shining with pride. Mama Gator beams, nuzzling her daughter. The bayou, once a place of dread, is now filled with possibility, and Allegra knows she’ll never have to face her fears alone again.
