The old king leans forward, his voice frail yet commanding, as his sons stand before him. "My sons, my days are few. Go into the world. In one year, return with the best thing you can find. The one who brings the best shall be king." The eldest brother, First Brother, straightens his cloak, determination flashing in his eyes, while the second and third brothers exchange eager, confident glances. The youngest, Fourth Brother, quietly ponders his father's words, his gaze lingering on the sunlight dancing across the ancient flagstones.
"I will search every city and town, and buy the finest gift for our father," declares First Brother, his voice echoing with certainty. Second Brother and Third Brother clasp hands, their laughter ringing out. "We will sail across the sea and return with treasures unknown," they proclaim. Fourth Brother simply nods. "I will seek wisdom among our own people,", he says softly. The others jeer, their mockery trailing behind as they set off in their chosen directions.
After several miles, Fourth Brother encounters a weathered man with heavy sacks. "What do you carry in those big bags?" he asks. "The best thing in the world: nuts from my five fine trees," replies the man, eyes twinkling. Fourth Brother shakes his head, smiling gently, and continues his journey, unconvinced.
Fourth Brother lifts the bird with care, tucking it safely into his coat. Further along, he hears soft sobs by a well and discovers a little girl, cheeks streaked with tears. "Why are you crying?" he asks gently. "I want to get water from the well, but it's too heavy for me," she replies, her voice trembling. Fourth Brother hands her the bird and helps draw up the bucket. "Thank you! What a lovely bird. May I keep it? I'll care for it every day," she pleads. "Yes, he is yours," he agrees, smiling at her delight before moving on.
He asks everyone he meets about the best thing in the world. Some say singing, others praise the joy of running and playing, while a few admire the beauty of flowers or the thrill of riding a swift horse. Fourth Brother always stops to lend a hand, mending fences, reading stories, or sharing meals. Gradually, the people grow fond of him, whispering as he passes, "There goes the king's son. He would be a good king for us," their voices full of hope and admiration.
The old king sits tall, his eyes sharp with expectation as his sons present their findings. The first three unveil jewels, silks, and exotic wonders, their voices swelling with pride. When Fourth Brother steps forward, empty-handed, laughter erupts from his siblings. "And what did you bring, my son?" the king asks, his gaze gentle. "Father, I bring only the friendship and love of your people," he answers quietly.
The old king’s eyes fill with tears as he smiles at Fourth Brother. "That is the best thing in the world! You shall be the new king," he declares, his voice ringing with joy. The hall erupts in celebration, and all the people rejoice, for kindness and friendship have won the day.
