The Old King looks upon his sons with tired but loving eyes. Outside, autumn leaves swirl in the palace courtyard, signaling the changing season and the end of an era.
"My sons, my time is nearly done," he begins, his voice echoing through the silent hall. "Go forth into the world. In a year, return with the best thing you can find. Whoever brings me the best shall be king."
First Brother, determined and proud, tightens his satchel, prepared to scour every city and market for treasures. Second Brother and Third Brother, eager and competitive, exchange glances before boarding their swift ship. Fourth Brother, thoughtful and gentle, lingers near the gate, considering the wisdom of his home.
"I will return with riches beyond imagination," boasts the First Brother. The others laugh as Fourth Brother declares, "I will seek the people's counsel in our own land."
Nut Gatherer, stooped and smiling, greets him warmly.
"What do you carry in those big bags?" "Only the best thing in the world—nuts from my five trees," replies Nut Gatherer.
Fourth Brother muses silently, "That cannot be enough."
Continuing on, he comes upon a well where Little Girl stands weeping, sunlight glinting off her tears.
"Why are you crying?" "I cannot draw water from the well," she sniffles. "Here, hold this bird while I help you," offers Fourth Brother. "Thank you! May I keep this pretty bird? I will care for it always," she pleads.
"Yes, you may have it," he replies, his heart lightened.
Some say singing brings the most joy; others praise the freedom of running and playing. A wise man on a black horse claims nothing is better than helping others. Wherever he goes, Fourth Brother stops to aid those in need, sharing meals, laughter, and stories.
Doors open for him, and word spreads: "He would be the right kind of king for us," villagers whisper.
The Old King gazes at each son in turn. First Brother, Second Brother, and Third Brother display glittering jewels, silks, and exotic artifacts. Fourth Brother stands empty-handed, yet his eyes are bright with warmth.
"And you, my youngest, what have you brought?" "Father, I bring only the friendship and gratefulness of your people," he replies.
"That is the best thing in the world!" the king proclaims, tears glistening on his cheeks. "You shall be the new king."
