A big black bull-arab X dog named Fen sat attentively by the back door, his ears perked up with curiosity. His humans had been away for a while and returned with something small and squirmy in their arms. Fen watched as they gently cradled the bundle, its tiny cries echoing through the house. "What is this strange, noisy creature?" he thought, tilting his head in confusion.
Fen approached cautiously, his curious nose sniffing the air. Henry was the baby's name, and though Fen wasn't sure what to make of him, he could sense the importance this little human held for his family. "He's not much fun right now," Fen thought, retreating to his favorite spot near the window.
Fen watched as Henry laughed, the sound like a melody that tugged at Fen's heart. Slowly, the dog inched closer, his tail wagging cautiously. Henry reached out, his small fingers brushing against Fen's fur. "Perhaps this little one isn't so bad," Fen thought, feeling a bond beginning to form.
Fen had taken it upon himself to be Henry's guide. Together, they explored the backyard, Fen showing Henry where the nicest flowers grew. "See, these are daisies, and those are tulips," Fen seemed to say, his nose pointing to each in turn, as Henry clapped his hands in delight.
Fen had shown Henry the best spots to dig holes, and in turn, Henry had taught Fen the joy of a good game of chase. Their bond had grown stronger with each shared adventure, their friendship evident in every shared glance and wag of the tail.
Fen rested his head gently on Henry's lap, feeling content. Henry patted his best friend's head, his eyes drooping with sleep. "We'll be best friends forever, won't we, Fen?" Henry murmured softly. And Fen, understanding every word, gave a gentle bark of agreement, knowing that he would always be there to guide and protect his little human.
