Liam, a boy of about ten, stands on his front porch, clutching a worn red leash. The house behind him is pale blue with white shutters, and the air is crisp with the promise of a new day. His eyes are wide with worry as he scans the empty yard, calling out into the silence.
"Max! Max, where are you? Come here, boy!"
Liam checks under porches and behind hedges, calling for his lost dog. The world feels bigger without Max by his side, and every chirping bird or rustling bush makes his heart leap. He pauses at the corner, breathless, hope flickering in his chest.
A friendly old man walking his golden retriever approaches Liam. The man smiles kindly, noticing the worry etched on the boy’s face.
"Looking for someone, son?"
"My dog, Max—he’s missing. He’s got a black spot on his ear and loves chasing squirrels."
"I’ll keep my eyes open. Don’t give up, dogs have a way of finding their way back."
Liam slumps onto his porch steps, red leash limp in his hands. He closes his eyes, remembering Max’s wagging tail and bright eyes. Suddenly, a faint, familiar bark catches his attention.
Liam leaps up, laughter bubbling out, and throws his arms around Max. The relief and joy on his face are unmistakable as Max licks his cheek.
"You silly dog! Where have you been? I was so worried!"
"Woof!" (Max’s tail thumps the porch.)
Liam strokes Max’s head, both of them content and at peace in the fading light. The neighborhood is quiet, the day’s worries washed away by their reunion. For Liam, home is complete again, and he whispers softly, "I’m never letting you out of my sight again, buddy."
