Jacob sat quietly on the porch, his green hair ruffled by the wind. He wore a well-crafted Easter bunny costume, its plush white fur and long ears making him appear more rabbit than boy. He watched as the neighborhood children played, his heart heavy with longing for his family.
"I wonder how they're doing," he murmured to himself, thinking of his family in the hospital.
Suddenly, Liam, a boy with a mop of brown hair and a determined look, appeared. He squinted slightly, adjusting his glasses as he scanned the area. With a decisive nod, he pointed directly at Jacob.
"There you are, George!" Liam exclaimed, his voice filled with relief.
Jacob blinked in confusion, realizing that Liam had mistaken him for a rabbit. "I'm not George!" he protested, his voice muffled by the costume's hood.
Liam approached with a gentle but firm grip, reaching out to 'capture' his lost pet. In a moment of surprise, Liam slipped a collar around Jacob's neck, securing it tightly.
"Wait, you've got it wrong!" Jacob shouted, trying to wriggle free, but the collar wouldn't budge.
Jacob tugged at the collar, frustration bubbling inside him. He hopped around in a desperate attempt to show Liam that he wasn't a rabbit.
"George, you're acting strange," Liam noted, his brow furrowing as he tried to understand.
"I'm not George! I'm Jacob!" Jacob insisted, each word punctuated by a hop.
Liam finally paused, squinting more closely at Jacob. "You're not George, are you?" he said slowly, realization dawning.
"No, but maybe we can be friends anyway?" Jacob suggested, offering a tentative smile from beneath his bunny hood.
Liam nodded, laughing softly. "Friends, then. But you do make a very convincing rabbit," he admitted, helping Jacob with the stubborn collar.
Jacob felt a warmth growing in his chest, a sense of belonging he hadn't felt since his family’s accident. "Maybe things will be okay," he thought, looking at Liam.
"We'll find George together," Liam declared, his voice full of determination.
Together, they gazed at the stars, two boys bound by a chance encounter and a shared hope for the future.
