The classroom buzzed with energy as the students settled into their seats. Their teacher, Ms. Johnson, stood at the front, smiling warmly. "Class, we have a new student joining us today," she announced. Ethan, a boy with noticeable red, dry patches on his skin, stepped forward shyly. The students exchanged curious glances, whispering among themselves.
As Ethan took his seat, the whispers grew louder. Jake, a boy with freckles, couldn't contain his curiosity. "Why does your skin look like that?" he blurted out. Ethan lowered his head, feeling the stares of his classmates. Sophie, sitting beside him, gave a small smile, trying to reassure him.
During recess, Ethan found himself alone on the bench. The other kids played tag and swung on the monkey bars, occasionally throwing glances his way. Tommy, feeling bold, called out, "Hey, red skin!" The words stung, and Ethan felt tears prick his eyes. He wished he could just disappear.
Ms. Johnson noticed the changes in her students and decided to intervene. "Today, we're going to learn about eczema," she began. She explained how it caused Ethan's skin to become red and itchy. The class listened intently, eyes widening as they understood how uncomfortable it must be for Ethan.
After the lesson, the classroom's atmosphere shifted. Sophie approached Ethan with a kind smile. "Do you want to play with us at recess?" she asked. Ethan nodded, a smile breaking through his shyness. Slowly, the other kids joined, eager to include him in their games.
On the playground, Ethan laughed as he joined the game of tag. Jake and Tommy ran beside him, treating him like any other friend. Ethan felt accepted and happy, no longer an outsider. Later, he thanked Ms. Johnson, gratitude shining in his eyes. "Thank you for helping me," he said softly. Ms. Johnson smiled, proud of her students for learning kindness and empathy.
