Lila sat by the window, her eyes fixed on the horizon where the sun dipped below the treetops. Her heart ached with the absence of her father, yet she forced a smile as her mother Maya entered the room.
"Dinner's ready, sweetheart," she said softly, her voice tinged with a strength she was trying hard to muster.
Lila and Maya sat across from each other, the silence heavy between them. "How was your day with Felix and Oakley?" Maya asked, referring to Lila's animal friends.
"We played by the stream," Lila replied, her voice bright and cheerful, hiding the sadness she felt inside.
Lila laughed as Felix darted up a tree, her heart momentarily lightened by the playful antics of her friend. Yet, beneath her laughter, she felt the weight of her father's absence, a shadow she couldn't escape.
Owlbert, the wise owl, watched Lila from above. "Not all burdens need to be carried alone, young one," he said, his voice gentle and understanding.
"But I don't want to make Mama sadder," Lila admitted, her voice barely a whisper.
Maya turned to Lila, her eyes filled with warmth and love. "You know, it's okay to feel sad and miss him. We both do," she said, pulling her daughter closer.
"Really?" Lila asked, her voice tinged with relief.
"Yes, and we can help each other feel better," Maya assured her.
Lila felt a new sense of peace as she walked beside her mother. She realized that by sharing her feelings, she was not only healing herself but also strengthening the bond with Maya.
"I think Dad would be happy to see us like this," Lila said softly.
"He would, my love," Maya replied, squeezing her daughter's hand gently.
