Maya, a ten-year-old girl with wild dark curls and mismatched socks, scribbles furiously in her notebook. Her desk overflows with crumpled worksheets and doodles of rockets and dragons. The teacher, Ms. Becker, watches with a mixture of exasperation and intrigue as Maya raises her hand for the fifth time in five minutes.
"Excuse me, Ms. Becker, but if we already know the answer to the math problem, can't we just skip to the next chapter?"
"Maya, please stay on task. And try to keep your area tidy, okay?"
"But what if I have a better way to solve it?"
Ms. Becker lets out a sigh as she discusses Maya's behavior with Mrs. Castillo, the gifted program coordinator. The air is thick with concern, but also a glimmer of hope.
"She's a handful, but I've never seen a child solve puzzles the way Maya does. Maybe she's just bored."
"Why don't I observe her tomorrow? Sometimes the brightest minds make the biggest messes."
Mrs. Castillo enters with a wide grin, holding a folder. Ms. Becker sits on the edge of her seat, while Maya fidgets with her curls, anticipation sparkling in her eyes.
"Maya, your scores are remarkable. You’re officially in the gifted program."
"Really? Does that mean I can do more puzzles? Maybe even invent some?"
"I'm so proud of you, Maya. I knew you were special."
Students gather around Maya, asking about her new classes. She grins, cheeks flushed with pride, and shares her excitement with anyone who will listen.
"Guess what? I get to build robots and write my own stories now. Maybe I’ll even invent a way to clean my desk with the push of a button!"
"Just remember to use your powers for good, Maya!"
Maya takes her seat at a new desk, already cluttered with fresh notebooks and half-finished models. She beams at Ms. Becker and Mrs. Castillo, ready for whatever comes next.
"I think this is going to be the best year ever."
