Huddy, a lively monkey with bright eyes and a mischievous grin, swings from a tree branch, calling out to his friend below.
Buggy, a large crocodile with a toothy smile, floats lazily near the river’s edge, basking in the gentle warmth of the early morning.
"Good morning, Buggy! The river looks so peaceful today. Want to share some mangoes with me?"
"Of course, Huddy. Throw me one, and maybe we can play afterwards,"
Buggy watches Huddy devour mango after mango, his eyes narrowing thoughtfully.
"Huddy, my wife has never tasted mangoes as sweet as these. Would you come with me to the other side of the river and share some with her?"
"I don’t know, Buggy. I can’t swim like you. How would I get across safely?"
"Just climb on my back. I promise I’ll take you straight there," he assures, lowering himself closer to the riverbank.
Huddy hesitates but finally hops onto Buggy's broad back, clutching his fur tightly as they set off across the river.
Halfway across, Buggy breaks the silence, his voice low and eager.
"To tell you the truth, Huddy, my wife is ill and believes eating a monkey’s heart will cure her. That’s why I’m really taking you to her."
Huddy feels a chill run down his spine as the truth dawns on him.
Thinking quickly, Huddy puts on an innocent face and responds.
"Oh, Buggy, if only you had told me before! I left my heart in my tree because it’s so precious. If you take me back, I’ll fetch it for you, and then you can take me to your wife."
Buggy pauses, confused but convinced by Huddy's earnest tone. He turns and starts swimming back.
As soon as Buggy reaches the bank, Huddy leaps nimbly into the tree, climbing to the highest branch.
"Buggy, how could you believe anyone could leave their heart behind? You tried to trick me, but you’ll never catch me now!"
Buggy stares up, frustration bubbling as he realizes he’s been outwitted.
Huddy settles into the crook of a sturdy branch, relieved and a little wiser.
"It’s better to be clever and cautious than to trust blindly," he murmurs to himself, watching Buggy drift away in defeat.
From that day forward, Huddy keeps a sharper eye out, and the tale of the clever monkey and the deceptive crocodile spreads through the riverside like ripples in the water.
