Mrs. Maple stood by the counter, her hands on her hips, puzzled by the vanishing cookies. "Not again! How do they keep disappearing?" she muttered to herself. The bakery was quiet, except for the gentle hum of the oven and the distant chirping of birds outside.
Max the Mouse watched as Mrs. Maple walked away, determined to solve the mystery. "This is a job for a detective," he squeaked to himself. He scurried along the wall, his tiny paws silent on the wooden floor, and headed towards his friend Penny the Parrot.
"What brings you here so early, Max?" Penny asked, cocking her head. "We've got a cookie thief on our hands, and I need your help," Max replied, explaining his plan to catch the culprit. Penny's eyes gleamed with excitement as she listened.
Max and Penny worked together, placing a plate of cookies on the counter, dusted with a trail of powdered sugar leading to a tiny bell alarm. "This will do the trick," Penny chirped confidently. Max nodded, positioning himself behind a stack of flour sacks.
Max and Penny waited patiently, their eyes trained on the cookie plate. Hours passed in silence, the anticipation growing with each ticking second. Suddenly, a shadow moved across the room, and the bell tinkled softly, alerting the duo.
"Aha! Caught you!" Max exclaimed, scurrying forward. The thief, a mischievous squirrel named Nutty, froze, his eyes wide with surprise. "I-I was only borrowing them," Nutty stammered, his cheeks full of cookies. "Well, let's talk about sharing next time," Penny suggested with a chuckle, as they all laughed under the moonlit sky.
