Lila stood at the edge of the pool, her small hands clenched tightly around the strap of her swim bag. Her heart pounded in her chest like a distant drum. She watched as the other children laughed and leaped into the water, their joy infectious yet intimidating.
Ms. Rivera, the swimming instructor, noticed her hesitation and approached with a warm smile. "First time at the pool, Lila?" she asked, her voice soothing like a gentle breeze.
"Yes, ma'am," Lila replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "You'll do just fine. Let's start with something simple, okay?"
Sophie, a confident girl with curly hair, splashed water playfully at Maya, a quiet and observant girl. "Come on, Maya! Let's show Lila how to make a big splash!"
Maya giggled, nodding in agreement. "It's easy, Lila. Just like jumping in puddles," she encouraged.
Lila watched them, feeling a spark of excitement mingling with her nerves. "Ready, Lila?" Sophie asked, extending a hand. With a deep breath, Lila took it, her anxiety slowly ebbing away.
"Remember, trust the water to hold you," Ms. Rivera instructed, her voice calm and reassuring.
Lila lay back tentatively, feeling the cool water cradle her body. She glanced at Sophie and Maya, who floated effortlessly beside her, their smiles encouraging her.
"I think I'm doing it," Lila exclaimed, a grin spreading across her face as the water buoyed her up.
Sophie and Maya cheered from below. "You can do it, Lila!" Maya called out, her voice full of belief.
Lila took a deep breath, remembering Ms. Rivera's words. With a final glance at her friends, she leaped, slicing through the water with newfound confidence.
Ms. Rivera approached, her eyes filled with pride. "You were amazing today, Lila. I'm so proud of you," she said.
Lila beamed, her heart swelling with happiness. "We make a great team," Sophie declared, wrapping an arm around Lila and Maya.
"I couldn't have done it without you both," Lila admitted, her voice full of gratitude and joy.
