Bessie, the cleverest cow in the herd, squints at the glimmering horizon and nudges her friends awake. In the corner by the hayloft, an old, dusty typewriter sits atop a bale of straw, forgotten by the farmer but not by the cows.
"Today is the day," she announces, her voice brimming with excitement.
Mooella, gentle and wide-eyed, blinks in the early light.
"What if Farmer Bill catches us? He said that typewriter was off-limits!"
Duke, the prankster bull, grins mischievously as he watches the others.
Bessie steps forward, her hooves clumsy but determined.
"We’ve practiced enough. Let’s write something the humans will never forget," she says, as the keys click and clack beneath her touch.
"What should we write?" asks Mooella, curiosity flickering in her eyes.
Bessie carefully pecks out the words: "Dear Farmer Bill, We, the cows, would like more alfalfa and less rain. Thank you."
Duke lets out a low chuckle.
"Maybe we should ask for a vacation, too," he jokes, causing Mooella to giggle.
"Don’t forget to sign it. With a hoof print, of course," she adds, her laughter echoing through the barn.
Farmer Bill, a kindly man with a weathered face and a knowing smile, adjusts his cap and reads aloud.
"Dear Farmer Bill… more alfalfa, less rain… Signed, The Cows?" He looks around, suspicion and amusement mingling in his eyes.
"Well, I never! Who’s been playing tricks in here?"
Bessie steps forward, her eyes sincere.
"We really do want more alfalfa, and perhaps a little music during milking," she says, hoping to appeal to his soft heart.
Farmer Bill scratches his chin, trying not to smile.
"If the cows are smart enough to type, I suppose they’ve earned a little extra," he replies warmly, laughter rumbling in his chest.
Mooella and Duke spin in slow circles, while Bessie sits by the typewriter, dreaming up their next story.
"Do you think we could write a book next?" asks Mooella, hope shining in her voice.
"Absolutely," replies Bessie, as laughter and music fill the night, and the cows celebrate their newfound talents together.
