Ralph[/@ch_1] stands anxiously near the couch, his eyes fixed on his twin sister.]
Riley is bundled tightly in a blanket, her cheeks flushed pink and her eyelids heavy. "Mom, I’ve never seen Riley like this. Is she going to be okay?" Mom kneels beside Riley, her presence calm and comforting, gently brushing a stray pigtail from the girl’s forehead. "She just has a common cold, Ralph. She needs a few things to help her feel better."
Ralph[/@ch_1] stands on tiptoe, determination etched on his face as he prepares to help.]
"Like what?" "Well, how about we start with some orange juice? Do you think you can get a glass for your sister?" "Sure," Ralph replies, hurrying toward the cupboard, but then pauses as curiosity returns. "But why orange juice?" "Because it has lots of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps your body fight off a cold," Mom explains, her tone patient. Understanding dawns in Ralph’s eyes as he pours the juice, careful not to spill a drop.
Ralph[/@ch_1] and Mom work side by side, their faces bright in the golden afternoon light.]
"Stay close, but keep a safe distance," Mom reminds, her eyes kind, as Ralph brings the juice to Riley. From the couch, "I’m hungry," Riley groans, her voice muffled by the blanket. "I’ll make you some chicken soup, baby," Mom promises, and as Ralph clambers onto a stool to watch, he asks, "Why chicken soup?"
Mom[/@ch_3] ladles steaming soup into a bowl, while Ralph listens intently, absorbing every detail.]
"Warm fluids help prevent dehydration and soothe her nose and throat so she can breathe easier," Mom says, her hands steady as she hands the bowl to Ralph. Together they carry the soup to Riley like a precious treasure, setting it gently on the coffee table. The room feels lighter as Riley sips the soup, her expression relaxing, the warmth visibly comforting her.
Mom[/@ch_3] arrives with a small cup of medicine, her expression gentle but firm.]
"I don’t like medicine," Riley protests, her nose wrinkling. Ralph looks worried, his empathy clear. "Why does she need it, Mom?" "It will help calm her cough, soothe her throat, and help her rest," Mom explains. "Come on. If you take it, maybe we can play outside tomorrow," Ralph encourages, and Riley bravely swallows the medicine, soon drifting into a peaceful sleep beneath her quilt.
Riley[/@ch_2] bursts into Ralph’s room, her energy restored and laughter on her lips.]
"Ralph! Let’s play!" she calls, but finds Ralph under the covers, sniffling, with Mom sitting at his bedside, thermometer in hand. "Oh my. Here we go again," Mom says with a knowing smile. "Don’t worry, Doctor Riley is here!" Riley declares, and laughter fills the house as the loving routines begin anew, warmth and care glowing as brightly as the morning sun.
