Luna skips between her parents, her hair tied with rainbow shoelaces, eyes wide with fresh questions. Dad wears socks with sandals and a “CloudCon 2024” T-shirt; Mom sports a cape made of recycled shopping bags. Painted clouds drift across murals, and a squirrel peeks from a mailbox, munching on a donut.
"Why do those big buildings have so much smoke coming out?"
"Ah, that’s where clouds are born," Dad declares with a straight face, "powered by bored raccoons running on hamster wheels inside. They unionized last year—now we get extra fluffy clouds."
Luna scribbles fiercely in her journal, her tongue poking out in concentration.
"Listen! The trees are gossiping again—probably about those squirrels who keep stealing their acorns," Mom whispers with a wink.
"What are they saying?" Luna asks, notebook at the ready.
"Something about a squirrel named Mr. Nutters and his new top hat," Dad adds, pointing at a squirrel striking a pose atop a mailbox. Luna giggles, jotting “Trees = squirrel gossipers” beside a doodle of a top-hatted squirrel.
"Whoa! That was LOUD!" Luna yelps, hugging her journal.
"The angels are in a tournament today," Dad grins, nodding to the heavens. "That last one was a STRIKE—Gabriel’s on fire!" Mom cheers, pretending to roll an invisible bowling ball. Luna draws a tiny angel in a bowling shirt beside a cloud.
"Why does the moon keep following us?" Luna wonders, watching it from her window.
"It’s got a huge crush on your mom. Don’t make it awkward," Dad says, as Mom blushes, waving shyly at the sky. Luna tries to hide her giggles, jotting “Moon = Mom’s secret admirer” with a doodle of a moon holding flowers.
"Are those raccoons on break? Or is it the angels’ afterparty?" Luna asks, raising an eyebrow.
"Uh… well, you see… actually…" Dad stammers, glancing at Mom for help.
"Sometimes, the sky has surprises even we can’t explain," Mom admits, ruffling Luna’s hair. Luna looks up, her journal slowing to a close.
Luna gazes at the ceiling, considering all her parents’ stories. She smiles, hugging her journal, realizing that whether or not factories make clouds or the moon is in love, the world is still full of magic—stories and all.
"Maybe the truth is even stranger than make-believe," she whispers, drifting off to sleep. Outside, a raccoon scurries past, holding a cloud-shaped balloon—just in case.
