Mia, a curious six-year-old with bright pigtails, sits on the floor building a tower of blocks. Her tabby cat, Whiskers, bats at a rolling ball nearby, making Mia giggle.
"Careful, Whiskers! Don’t knock my tower down," she says, carefully placing another block on top.
Whiskers[/@ch_2] leaps, sending the blocks clattering across the floor. Mia’s mom, Mrs. Carter, is in the kitchen, humming as she fills a glass with water. Suddenly, Mrs. Carter drops the glass, clutching her chest.]
Mia looks up in alarm as she hears the crash. Mrs. Carter sinks onto a chair, her face pale.
"Mommy, are you okay?" Mia calls, her voice trembling.
Mia[/@ch_1] and Mrs. Carter smiling together. Mia remembers a lesson from school about emergencies.]
She rushes to the counter and grabs the phone, her hands shaking a little. She recalls her teacher’s words about calling 911 when someone needs help.
"I have to be brave," she whispers, punching in the numbers.
Ms. Harper[/@ch_4], a friendly emergency dispatcher with kind eyes and a headset, sees Mia’s call pop up on her screen. The walls are lined with maps and twinkling monitors.]
"911, what’s your emergency?" she says gently, her voice calm and steady.
"My mommy is sick! She’s holding her chest and can’t talk very well," Mia replies, her voice quivering.
"You did the right thing by calling, Mia. Can you tell me your address? Help is on the way. You’re very brave," soothes Ms. Harper.
Mia opens the door just as the paramedics arrive. Whiskers hides behind the curtains, peeking out with wide green eyes.
"You did an amazing job, Mia," says one of the paramedics, kneeling down to her level. Mia feels a little less scared as she watches them help her mother.
Mrs. Carter[/@ch_3] sits on the couch, a blanket around her shoulders, smiling at Mia. Ms. Harper calls back to check in, her voice warm through the phone.]
"You were very brave today, Mia. Emergency dispatchers are always here to help, and you did just what you should,"
"I’m so proud of you, sweetheart," says Mrs. Carter, hugging Mia tight. Whiskers hops into Mia’s lap, purring, as the family basks in the comfort of knowing help is always just a call away.
