Milo[/@ch_1], whose tousled hair sticks up like lightning bolts.]
Milo blinked awake, rubbing his eyes. He squinted at the note: “Your brain is taking a day off. Good luck!” For a second, he giggled, but then he reached up and knocked on his forehead—just to be sure. Nothing. Not even a thunk. "Uh-oh," he whispered, voice wobbling between excitement and pure panic.
Sir Buttonsworth, Milo’s talking belly button, cleared his (nonexistent) throat. "Ahem! In the absence of your brain, I, Sir Buttonsworth, will act as your chief advisor. First order of business: jelly shoes on your hands. Your feet are simply too distracted today." Milo shrugged. That made sense—sort of—so he jammed his jelly shoes onto his hands and tiptoed downstairs, fingers squeaking with every step.
Milo[/@ch_1] arrives with jelly shoes on his hands, a mismatched backpack, and a look of wild hope. The bell rings—a sound suspiciously like a rubber chicken.]
Ms. Pennyfeather, the suspiciously calm librarian, glides by with a stack of books taller than her hat. She barely blinks at Milo’s shoes-for-hands. "Good morning, Milo. I see you’re expressing yourself today," she says serenely. Sir Buttonsworth whispers, "She’s seen everything. Trust no one—except perhaps the janitor. Janitors know secrets." Milo nods gravely, then tries to open his locker with his feet.
Agent Barkley[/@ch_4], the hall monitor in oversized sunglasses and a trench coat, appears from behind a trophy case, clipboard in hand.]
"Hold it right there, citizen! Why are you wearing shoes on your hands?" Milo tries to salute, but the jelly shoes squish instead. "My brain is on vacation, so my hands are on…footcation?" "Carry on, but remember: the cafeteria is a high-risk zone today," Agent Barkley mutters, then vanishes into a cloud of suspiciously glittery smoke.
Milo[/@ch_1] sits at a table, attempting to eat spaghetti with his ears, as Sir Buttonsworth offers dubious advice.]
"Twist your head left, then right—now scoop! No, not in your nose, lad!" Spaghetti ends up in his hair, on his shirt, and somehow under the table. Milo laughs so hard he snorts milk. Nearby, Ms. Pennyfeather reads calmly, unfazed by the flying noodles.
Milo[/@ch_1] sits cross-legged, surrounded by upside-down books and the gentle shushing of Ms. Pennyfeather.]
Sir Buttonsworth sighs. "Perhaps… just listen to your heart, sir. It’s surprisingly clever." Milo closes his eyes, feeling the thump-thump inside his chest. The world stops spinning for a moment. He breathes, smiles, and decides to finish the day just being Milo—jelly hands and all.
Milo grins at his reflection in the window, wiggling his fingers and toes. "When I woke up the next day, my brain was back… but I kinda missed how weird things were without it. So we made a deal: once a week, my brain takes a nap, and I just... figure it out."
