Sam rubbed their eyes, blinking at the sunbeams that danced across the room. Normally, their shadow would stretch and yawn alongside them, mimicking every move. But today, the space next to the bed was empty—no dark twin bouncing on the wall, no playful wiggle under the desk.
"Shadow? Where are you hiding?"
The silence was strange and a little lonely, with only the quiet hum of morning filling the space.
Sam caught a glimpse of themselves—one figure, no shadowy companion. Puzzled, they waved their arms and did a silly dance, but the only thing moving was Sam.
"Did you get bored of me? Or maybe you wanted an adventure," they whispered, memories of every game and giggle they’d shared with their shadow flickering in their mind.
Sam wandered through the park, feeling strangely off-balance, like half of them was missing. They watched as other kids’ shadows leaped and twirled, but Sam’s shoes left no dark echo behind. Every time Sam tried to join a game or climb a tree, it felt as if someone important wasn’t there to cheer them on.
"I didn’t realize how much I’d miss you," they sighed, kicking at a patch of sunlight.
Shadow reveled in the freedom of not having to copy anyone. It danced a wobbly ballet, swooped across an easel, and even tried to be the outline for a beaming little girl sketching nearby. But every giggle and swirl felt emptier without Sam’s laughter following along.
"I thought I wanted to be anyone’s shadow—but it’s just not the same," the shadow murmured, a little wispier than before.
A gentle breeze stirs, and suddenly, a familiar shape stretches along the grass beside Sam. It’s their shadow, flickering shyly but unmistakably theirs.
"You came back! Did you have fun out there?"
"I missed you too. I painted, I danced, I even tried being someone else’s shadow. But now I know—I like being your shadow best,"
The night air is full of new stories to share, and as they laugh together, Sam realizes their shadow is more than just a copy—it’s a friend. Both a little wiser, they promise never to take each other for granted again, ready for whatever adventures tomorrow may bring.
