Belle, the energetic black and white border collie, wagged her tail with anticipation as Mom and Dad secured the sled to the snowmobile. Ethan, the 6-year-old boy, was already seated, his wide eyes sparkling with excitement, while little Gus, the 1-year-old baby, giggled from his snug seat. "I think we're ready to find the perfect Christmas tree," said Mom, wrapping her scarf tighter against the cold. "Let's go before the sun gets too high," Dad chimed in, revving the engine.
The rhythmic hum of the snowmobile and the crunch of snow underfoot created a symphony of winter sounds. Belle kept pace, occasionally darting ahead to chase a flurry of snowflakes or peeking back to ensure her family was following. "Look, Belle! We're getting closer!" Ethan called out, his voice filled with excitement.
Belle's instincts led her deeper into the forest, her nose guiding her to an area where the trees were particularly lush and vibrant. She paused, barking happily to signal her find. Mom and Dad exchanged smiles, following her lead. "I think Belle's found our tree," Dad remarked, admiring the tall, full evergreen that stood before them.
Mom held Gus while Dad and Ethan took turns with the saw, careful with each stroke. Belle watched intently, her tail wagging with approval. Once the tree was felled, she grabbed a sturdy branch with her teeth, helping to drag it back through the snow to the waiting sled.
Belle ran alongside the sled, her heart full of pride. "We couldn't have done it without you, Belle," Dad said, reaching down to pat her head. Ethan nodded, holding onto a shiny ornament that Belle would help place on their tree once they got home.
Belle sat beside Ethan as he carefully hung the ornament on a low branch, her eyes watching every move. "Merry Christmas, Belle," Mom whispered, leaning down to give her a gentle hug. As the family stood back to admire their handiwork, Belle nestled into her spot, content and happy, knowing she was an important part of these cherished holiday memories.
