Farmer McMichaels rises with the sun, his sturdy boots thumping softly on the wooden floor as he steps outside. He stretches, breathes in the crisp morning air, and makes his way toward the barn, where the chorus of animals awaits him. "My dear ones, how are you today?" Inside, a rooster fluffs his feathers, a pig snuffles in the straw, a cow blinks sleepily, and somewhere in the shadows, a cat arches her back. The animals brighten at the sound of Farmer McMichaels's warm greeting, their affection for him clear in the way they gather near.
Farmer McMichaels moves from task to task with practiced care, plowing the earth and tending to each animal as if they were his own kin. He pats the horse’s flank, scratches the pig behind the ears, and refills the duck’s pond, all while humming a jaunty tune. Despite his age, his hands are steady and his eyes twinkle with quiet contentment.
Farmer McMichaels settles into his overstuffed chair, the day’s work behind him. The newspaper rustles as he reads, his eyelids drooping until a gentle snore signals his peaceful nap. After a while, drawn by the smell of simmering stew, he wakes, stirs a pot brimming with beef and garden vegetables, and sits down to savor his meal, feeling the satisfaction of a day well spent.
After clearing his dishes, Farmer McMichaels changes into his favorite western shirt, blue jeans, cowboy hat, and boots. He stands tall, a spark of youthful excitement in his step, and presses play on the old stereo. As the music fills the room, he begins to line dance, boots clicking, body twisting and turning with surprising grace. "One, two, three—let's go!" He practices each move with dedication, dreaming of the upcoming local dance contest and the hope of winning the prize to build a new fence.
The rooster, pig, cow, horse, cat, dog, and duck creep quietly to a window, careful not to disturb the night. Peering inside, they watch Farmer McMichaels whirl and stomp, laughter and joy radiating from him. The animals exchange glances, their curiosity deepening. Clarabelle the Cow, wise and gentle, whispers, "I wonder what he's practicing for. He looks so happy!"Percy the Pig snorts softly, "Maybe he's got a secret he's not telling us." The animals themselves begin to dance in the barn. Henry the horse kicks his heels high. Corky the dog rolls over, Mary the cat leaps in the air, Percy the pig swishes her tail and gives a perfect oink, and Clarabelle the Cow gives a magnificent moo while Ricky the Rooster calls out and fans his feathers with a cock-o-doodle. All the animals were having such a grand time. Ricky Rooster says I will find out what the Farmer is up too and so early the next morning he watched through the window of the house. There he found the farmer filling out a dance competition application. So that's it said Ricky. Ricky told all the animals about the farmer's secret. The day of the event came and all the animals showed up on stage with the farmer. He was shocked and overwhelmed. The performance took place and the dancers were magnificent! The judges took the podium and announced the winners! It is an honor to present the one thousand dollars to Farmer McMichaels and his animal dancers. The crowd applauded! My dear ones we have won the grand prize. Now I can buy the fence for the farm. The animals gleamed with excitement and took a well deserved bow!
