Leo stood at the edge of the playground, clutching his backpack tightly. His eyes darted around, taking in the sea of unfamiliar faces. Despite the noise, he felt like the world was holding its breath, waiting for him to make his move.
Leo found his assigned seat near the window and sat down quietly. As the teacher, Mrs. Thompson, began roll call, he gazed out at the vibrant leaves dancing in the breeze. He longed to speak up, to share his thoughts, but the words seemed stuck in his throat.
"Let's welcome our new students," she said, glancing at Leo. He felt a dozen pairs of eyes turn towards him. Maya, a girl with curious eyes and a friendly smile, caught his gaze and nodded slightly, as if to say, "It's okay."
Leo perked up as they discussed the wonders of the solar system. "Did you know there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on all the Earth's beaches?" he blurted out, surprising even himself. The room fell silent, and then Maya, sitting across from him, grinned. "That's really cool, Leo!"
Leo found a quiet corner to sit and scribble in his notebook. He wrote about the stars, the planets, and the mysteries of the universe. Maya, noticing him alone, approached with a curious expression. "What are you writing?" she asked, peering over his shoulder.
Leo hesitated, then handed Maya his notebook. "It's about space," he said shyly. Maya flipped through the pages, her eyes widening with interest. "This is amazing, Leo! We should write a story together," she suggested. Leo nodded, feeling a warmth spread through him. For the first time, he felt truly seen.
