Eli stood by the entrance, clutching his backpack like a lifeline. The chatter around him was a blur, a cacophony that seemed impossible to penetrate. "Here goes nothing," he muttered under his breath, stepping through the doors into the unknown.
Eli glanced at his crumpled schedule, the words swimming before his eyes. "Room 12B...or was it 21B?" he wondered aloud, feeling a knot tighten in his stomach. The bell rang sharply, urging him to make a decision, any decision, quickly.
Eli sat alone at a table, picking at his food while trying to ignore the buzz of conversation around him. He felt like an outsider, adrift in a world that moved too fast and too loud. "I wish I could just disappear," he thought, pushing his tray away.
Maya slid into the seat across from Eli. "Mind if I join you? I'm Maya." Her voice was calm, cutting through the noise like a comforting melody. Eli nodded, relief flooding through him. "I'm Eli. Nice to meet you," he replied, a tentative smile forming.
"I know how overwhelming it can be," Maya said, her eyes kind and empathetic. "I have a brother with dyslexia. He struggled a lot at first, but it gets better." Eli felt a weight lift off his shoulders, the knot in his stomach loosening. "Thanks. It’s just...hard," he admitted.
Eli walked beside Maya toward the exit, the once daunting hallways now feeling a bit more navigable. "See you tomorrow?" Maya asked, her smile encouraging and unwavering. Eli nodded, a sense of hope kindling in his chest. "Definitely," he replied, stepping into the twilight with a newfound confidence.
