Lukas stood at the edge of the playground, his small hands gripping a toy dinosaur tightly. His eyes darted from one child to another, each unfamiliar face adding to the knot of anxiety in his stomach. The cheerful chatter around him felt distant, almost like a foreign language.
"I miss Mama," he whispered to himself, his voice barely audible over the playground's lively chaos.
Lukas found a quiet corner, away from the bustling group of children. He sat down on a small, brightly colored chair, his dinosaur resting on his lap. His eyes focused on a drawing of a castle hanging nearby, its turrets reaching toward the sky.
"I wish I could be brave like a knight," he thought, tracing the outline of the castle with his eyes.
Emma, a girl with a bright pink bow in her hair, stood beside him, holding a piece of paper. "Do you want to color with me?" she asked, her voice kind and inviting.
Lukas hesitated, glancing at the dinosaur in his hands. But something in Emma's smile gave him a flicker of courage.
"Okay," he replied softly, placing his dinosaur carefully on the table before reaching for a crayon.
As Lukas colored alongside Emma, he found himself smiling. They shared stories about their favorite animals, and Lukas even showed her his dinosaur, explaining how it was the bravest of them all.
"I like it," Emma said, her eyes wide with admiration. "Maybe we can play with it later?"
Lukas nodded, feeling a warmth spread through him that melted away some of his fears.
Lukas felt a sense of accomplishment as he placed his dinosaur back into his backpack. Emma waved goodbye, promising to see him tomorrow.
"Bye, Emma! I can't wait to play again," he called out, his voice more confident than it had been that morning.
Lukas walked towards Mama, who was waiting by the gate, her smile wide and welcoming. As he ran into her arms, he felt a new sense of hope blossoming within him.
"I made a friend today," he announced proudly, feeling the weight of his earlier fears lifting.
"I'm so proud of you," Mama replied, holding him close. Together, they walked home, the sunset painting a beautiful end to Lukas's first day at kindergarten.
