Helen sat at her usual desk, her eyes bright with curiosity as she scanned the room. Today was special; there was a new girl in class. Maya stood awkwardly near the teacher's desk, clutching her backpack straps tightly. Her eyes darted around, unsure of where to sit.
"Hi, I'm Helen. You can sit next to me if you want," she offered with a welcoming smile.
"Thanks. I'm Maya. I just moved here," she whispered, a hint of nervousness in her voice.
"Where did you live before?" Helen asked, genuinely interested.
"In Willow Creek. It's much quieter there," Maya replied, relaxing a bit as she spoke.
Helen and Maya sat together, unpacking their lunches. Helen noticed Maya's lunch was much simpler and offered her a sandwich.
"Do you want to try this? My mom makes extras," Helen said kindly.
"Really? Thank you," Maya said, her face lighting up with gratitude.
Helen and Maya ran to the swings, their laughter joining the chorus. As they swung higher, Helen felt a warm glow of happiness.
"This is fun! I was scared I wouldn't make any friends," Maya confessed, her eyes sparkling.
"You have me now. We'll do lots of fun things together," Helen promised.
Helen felt a sense of pride as she packed her bag. She had learned something important today—that kindness could turn strangers into friends.
"I can't wait for tomorrow," she said to herself, imagining the new adventures with Maya.
Maya walked beside Helen, her heart full of hope. The world seemed a little less daunting with a friend by her side.
"Thanks for today, Helen. You're the best," Maya said softly.
"Anytime. See you tomorrow!" Helen replied, waving as they parted ways.
