Lila entered the room, her eyes wide with curiosity and a small teddy bear clutched tightly in her hands. She spotted her friend Max lying in the hospital bed, surrounded by books and toys. "Hi, Max! I brought you a new friend," she said, holding the bear up for him to see.
Max, a brave boy with a bright smile despite his pale complexion, grinned and reached out for the bear. "Thanks, Lila! He's perfect," he replied, placing the teddy beside him.
Lila gazed out at the garden, her mind full of questions. "Max, my mom said you're here because of something called cancer. What is that?" she asked, her voice filled with innocence.
Max looked thoughtful for a moment. "Well, Lila, you know how sometimes weeds grow in a garden and try to take over the flowers?" he explained. "Cancer is kind of like those pesky weeds. It's something that shouldn't be there, and it tries to make us sick."
Lila's eyes widened in understanding. "Oh, so the doctors and nurses are like the gardeners, right? They help you get rid of the weeds so you can feel better," she said, her face lighting up with the realization.
Max nodded, his smile growing. "Exactly! And with friends like you visiting, it helps me feel even stronger," he added, giving her a grateful look.
Lila reached out and took Max's hand. "I'll be your friend-gardener, too. We'll make sure those weeds don't stand a chance," she declared with determination.
Max squeezed her hand back, feeling a warmth spread through him that had nothing to do with the sun. "Together, we'll make the garden grow strong again," he agreed, filled with hope and friendship.
Lila looked at Max and smiled. "I'll come back tomorrow, and we can read more stories," she promised, her voice full of warmth and care.
Max nodded, his eyes growing heavy with sleep. "I'd like that, Lila. You're the best friend a kid could have," he murmured, drifting off into a peaceful slumber.
Lila gently closed the door behind her, feeling a sense of purpose and understanding. She knew that with love, support, and a little bit of friendship, they could face anything together.
