Lily, a bright-eyed 6-year-old girl, presses her face against the tank, her breath fogging the glass slightly. "Good morning, Sunny," she chirps, her voice filled with unconditional love.
"I hope you had sweet dreams. Today, we're going to draw pictures together!"
Lily is tucked in bed, her eyes fluttering as she drifts into a dream. In the dream, she sees Sunny the Yellow Betta Fish, swimming gracefully in a golden ocean under a sky full of stars.
"Don't be sad, little one," Sunny's voice echoes gently, "I'm sending you a friend to keep you company."
Lily wakes to find the tank still, her heart sinking with a child's understanding. Tears well up in her eyes as she whispers a goodbye to Sunny, her small hand resting on the glass.
"I'll miss you, Sunny," she says, her voice a soft promise.
Lily’s Mother kneels down, presenting the box with a twinkle in her eye. "This is for you, sweetheart. Open it and see."
Lily carefully lifts the lid, her eyes widening in surprise and delight.
Lily claps her hands in excitement, her previous sadness replaced by wonder. "Hello there! I'll call you Bluebell," she decides with a giggle.
"We'll be the best of friends, just like I was with Sunny."
Lily leans closer to the tank, whispering her secrets and dreams to Bluebell. "I think Sunny sent you," she muses softly, "to make sure I'm never lonely."
"Thank you, Sunny," she whispers into the quiet room, a smile playing on her lips as Bluebell swims in happy circles.
