Alivia pedaled her bike slowly, her pigtails bouncing with each bump in the pavement. She glanced at the house that all the neighborhood kids whispered about, her heart beating a little faster. Some said they saw ghostly faces in the windows, others claimed to hear strange music at midnight.
Alivia[/@ch_1] notices a small figure sitting on the porch steps of the haunted house, clutching a ragged teddy bear. The air feels heavy and still, as if holding its breath.]
"Hi," Alivia called out, her voice trembling just a bit. For a moment, the girl on the steps stared back with wide, curious eyes. Then she offered the faintest of smiles.
Mara (The mysterious girl down the street: small, pale, with tangled brown hair and a quiet voice) looked at Alivia shyly.
"You're not scared of me?"
"No. I mean, I was, but... I think people are just scared of things they don't understand," Alivia replied, her eyes searching the porch for any sign of ghosts.
"My mom says people stopped visiting after my grandma got sick. They say the house is haunted, but it's just lonely," Mara confided, hugging her teddy bear tighter.
"Maybe we could play together. I could bring my chalk and we can draw on your porch," Alivia offered, her voice brightening with hope.
Alivia and Mara giggle as they hop between chalk shapes, inventing new games. Neighbors peek through their curtains, surprised to see joy spilling out from the old house. The air feels lighter, the shadows less ominous.
"Thanks for not being afraid," Mara whispered.
"Everyone needs a friend. And maybe now, people will see your house the way I do," Alivia replied, squeezing her new friend's hand as the first stars twinkled above.
