Tommy the Turkey pecked nervously at the ground, his feathers ruffled with unease. He had overheard the humans in the big house talking excitedly about the upcoming feast, and he couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that settled in his gut. "I don’t want to be the main course," he muttered to himself, glancing around the yard for a place to hide.
Lucy the Squirrel paused in her frantic search for acorns, noticing Tommy's troubled demeanor. "Hey, what’s got you so ruffled?" she chattered, twitching her bushy tail as she approached.
"Thanksgiving," Tommy sighed, lowering his head. "I heard the humans saying I’d make a fine dinner."
Lucy tilted her head, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Well, we can’t let that happen, can we? Maybe we can come up with a plan to escape."
Tommy perked up, a spark of hope igniting in his heart. "Really? You’d help me?" he asked, his voice tinged with gratitude.
"Of course! Friends stick together," Lucy declared, her resolve firm.
"We could dig a tunnel under the fence," Tommy suggested, scratching at the ground with his talons.
Lucy shook her head, her whiskers twitching with thought. "Too slow. How about we use the old wheelbarrow to roll you out when no one’s looking?"
Tommy nodded, his spirits lifting with each new idea. Together, they devised a daring escape plan, filled with courage and the promise of freedom.
Lucy scampered up the oak tree, ready to act as the lookout. Tommy took a deep breath, his heart pounding with anticipation. "Okay, on three," he whispered to himself.
"One... two... three!" came Lucy's signal, and with a determined flap of his wings, Tommy sprinted towards the wheelbarrow, jumping in with all his might.
Lucy cheered from her perch, watching as her friend made his daring escape. Tommy felt the wind in his feathers, a triumphant cry bubbling from his beak as the gate loomed closer.
With one final push, Tommy was free, the wheelbarrow careening into the field beyond. He tumbled out onto the soft grass, laughter spilling from him as he realized he had done it. He was safe.
Lucy scampered down the tree, joining him in the field. They both shared a moment of joy, knowing that together, they had turned a day of fear into one of victory and friendship.
