Ms. Place gathered her kindergarteners in a circle on the carpet, her eyes twinkling with anticipation. "Class, today is Groundhog Day! If our groundhog sees its shadow, winter will continue for six more weeks. If not, spring will come early!" "But I've got a surprise… we have our very own classroom groundhog to make a prediction!"
Riley B. and Zain carefully opened a small box, revealing a stuffed groundhog adorned with tiny glasses and a bow tie. "Meet Mr. Wiggles,"[/@ch_1_d] [@ch_1]Ms. Place announced with a flourish. The children erupted in cheers, their imaginations igniting as they prepared to unveil the groundhog's prediction.
As the children gathered in the playground, their breath visible in the cold air, they looked around in confusion. Mr. Wiggles was gone! Karleigh gasped, pointing to a small piece of paper fluttering near the swings. "Look! A clue!" Ms. Place quickly retrieved it, her curiosity piqued.
"If you want your groundhog back, you must solve a riddle… Find the people old and wise, They're dressed in a fun disguise!" she read aloud, the words sparking excitement and intrigue among the children.
Logan exclaimed, "Let's find the 'old' kids!" Inside, they discovered Leon, Emma, Steven, and Charlotte dressed in gray wigs and oversized glasses. Tyler even sported a comical walking cane.
Riley S. adopted her best elderly voice, "In my 100 years, I've never seen a missing groundhog before!" The children laughed, their spirits lifted as they worked together to solve the mystery.
Leon stroked his pretend beard thoughtfully. "Maybe the groundhog is hiding… somewhere where we count to 100 every day." Riley shouted excitedly, "The hundreds chart!"
Everyone sprinted to the math corner, where Mr. Wiggles sat proudly on the 100th square, clutching another note. Ms. Place read it aloud, her voice filled with pride. "Great job, detectives! Since you worked together, you solved the mystery! Now, for the big prediction…"
Ms. Place peeked out the window with Mr. Wiggles in hand. "Shadow!" she announced triumphantly, declaring winter's continuation. The classroom erupted in cheers, high-fives exchanged among the young detectives who had cracked the case.
In celebration, the kindergarteners indulged in all things 100—100 snacks, 100 jumping jacks, and a vibrant parade around the school. Laughter and joy filled the air as they closed the case of the missing groundhog, already anticipating the mysteries to come in the years ahead.
