Maya, a brave, curly-haired girl in a bright yellow raincoat, pedals fast, her eyes wide with anticipation.
Benji, her best friend, follows on his skateboard, clutching a flashlight and a notebook for detective work.
"Did you hear that spooky music? The ice cream truck sounds... different tonight!"
"Maybe it's a new driver! Or maybe it's haunted."
Mr. Scoops, the mysterious driver with a pointy hat and sparkling bowtie, appears, grinning with an odd glimmer in his eye.
"Let's get closer and see what's inside. If it's haunted, we need clues!"
"I've got my notebook ready. Maybe we'll spot a ghost!"
Maya[/@ch_1] and Benji tiptoe closer, their shadows stretching across the pavement. The inside glows with weird green lights, and shelves overflow with monster-shaped treats that wiggle when touched.]
Maya gently pokes a wiggly eyeball pop, which blinks back at her.
"Welcome to my Spooktacular Sweets! Care for a taste?"
"Um... do they always blink? Is this normal?"
"Only on mysterious nights like tonight!"
"A riddle? We love riddles!"
"If you solve it, you’ll win the Midnight Monster Sundae. But beware, it’s not for the faint of heart!"
"We’re not scared! What’s the riddle?"
Maya[/@ch_1] and Benji read the riddle aloud, their voices echoing in the chilly mist: “What has a spine but no bones, pages but no words, and stories that come alive at night?” The skeleton puppet dances, rattling its bones, while the kids huddle together, thinking hard.]
"A book! It has a spine, pages, and stories!"
"You solved it! You’re braver than most. The Midnight Monster Sundae is yours!"
"That was the best scary-licious adventure ever! We should solve more mysteries."
"Next time, maybe the haunted pizza parlor!"
The street is calm again, but the kids know that every night holds a little bit of magic—and maybe a mystery, too.
