Alex Rivera, a 13-year-old with messy brown hair and a love for music, groans as the alarm clock buzzes.
"I really can't stand waking up early," he mutters, pulling the blanket over his head. The sound of his mom’s cheerful humming makes him sigh—she always insists on starting the day with a healthy breakfast.
Mrs. Rivera, Alex’s energetic mom who loves healthy cooking, places a steaming bowl of oatmeal in front of him.
"Good morning, Alex! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I know you love strawberries, so I added extra," she says with a smile.
"Thanks, Mom, but I really hate oatmeal. I wish we could have pancakes every day," Alex replies, poking at his food.
"But you can't ignore the vitamins and fiber your body needs!" Mrs. Rivera insists.
Jake, Alex’s best friend who loves junk food and video games, meets him by the lockers.
"Dude, I can’t believe your mom makes you eat all that healthy stuff. My favorite breakfast is chocolate cereal," Jake teases.
"Honestly, I kind of wish I could eat like you, but my mom says I’d be tired all day," Alex laughs.
"Well, I love sleeping in, but I hate when I feel sleepy in class," Jake admits, slumping against his locker.
Coach Miller, a cheerful gym teacher who encourages healthy habits, claps his hands to get everyone’s attention.
"Alright, everyone! Time for our Healthy Habits Challenge. Today, we’re talking about exercise, sleep, and nutrition. Who can tell me a healthy habit they practice?"
"Um, I try to drink lots of water, even though I can’t stand the taste sometimes," Alex offers, a little shyly.
"Great job, Alex! Staying hydrated is super important. Anyone else?"
"I try to walk my dog after school. I love fresh air, but I hate getting sweaty," Jake adds, making the class laugh.
Alex sits with Jake and a few classmates, unpacking his lunchbox filled with carrot sticks, a turkey sandwich, and apple slices.
"My mom says I need to eat more veggies, but I really dislike carrots," Alex admits, glancing at his friends.
"I love apples, but I can’t stand broccoli. My parents always sneak it into my dinner," Jake groans.
"At least we agree on one thing—everyone loves pizza day!" Alex grins, and they all laugh.
Alex decides he wants to feel strong and happy every day, even if it means eating a few things he doesn’t love.
"I guess healthy habits aren’t always fun, but I love having energy for soccer and music," he says to himself.
He walks a little taller, proud that he’s learning what’s good for him—and maybe, just maybe, oatmeal isn’t the worst thing in the world after all.
