Gerald stretches his long neck to reach the freshest leaves at the very top of the tree. He hums a cheerful tune, clearly enjoying his lunch and the peacefulness of the sunny day.
Suddenly, the ground trembles as Billy charges in, his heavy hooves kicking up little clouds of dust. He pauses, spots Gerald, and bursts out laughing, waving his hoof in the air.
"Hey, Noodle-Neck! How’s the weather up there? Watch out or you might tie yourself in a knot!"
Gerald lowers his head, a frown shadowing his gentle face. He answers quietly, his mood dampened by Billy's teasing.
"Hello, Billy. I’m just eating my lunch."
"You look silly. You’re too tall and your legs are like sticks. Why don't you try being strong and tough like me?"
Billy stomps the ground, sending dust swirling around Gerald's spindly legs, then bounds away with a laugh. Gerald sighs deeply and slowly walks off, his lunch forgotten.
Leo lounges gracefully atop a sun-warmed rock, his golden mane glowing in the light. He notices Gerald approaching, head bowed and steps heavy.
"Gerald? Why the long face? And I don't mean because you're a giraffe. You look sad."
"Oh, hi Leo. It’s Billy. He made fun of my neck and my legs. He called me 'Noodle-Neck.'"
"That wasn’t very kind."
"Maybe he’s right. Maybe I am too weird. I wish I was tough like a buffalo."
Leo rises and pads closer, his eyes full of wisdom and warmth.
"Gerald, your long neck helps you see things no one else can see, and reach fruit no one else can reach. You are perfect just the way you are."
"Thanks, Leo. But Billy makes me feel small, even though I’m tall."
"Leave this to me, my friend. I think Billy needs a little lesson in how hearts work."
Billy[/@ch_2] plays roughly.]
Leo approaches quietly, his steps soft and deliberate, settling nearby without a sound. Billy jumps up, startled but curious.
"Oh! Leo! You scared me. Are you going to roar?"
"No roaring today, Billy. I just want to ask you a question."
"Okay. Shoot."
"I saw you teasing Gerald earlier. You were laughing, but Gerald wasn't."
"I was just joking! He’s so tall and lanky. It’s funny."
"Imagine if someone made fun of your horns. Imagine if they said your horns looked like bent bananas and laughed at you."
"Hey! My horns are strong! That would make me feel... bad."
"Exactly. When you tease Gerald, you aren't being funny. You are hurting his feelings. Being strong isn't about how hard you can stomp; it’s about how kind you can be."
Billy lowers his head, his hooves stirring the dirt as he thinks about Leo's words.
"I didn’t think about it like that. I just thought we were playing."
"True strength is admitting when you’re wrong, Billy. What do you think you should do?"
"I need to find Gerald."
Gerald[/@ch_1] stands quietly beneath the tree, not eating, just gazing at the horizon.]
Billy approaches slowly, his usual energy replaced with nervousness. Leo watches from afar, a gentle smile on his face.
"Um... Gerald?"
"Hi, Billy. Please don't kick dust on me."
"I won’t. I promise. I came to say I’m sorry."
"You are?"
"Yes. Leo explained it to me. I shouldn't have called you names. Your neck is actually really cool because you can see everything. I was just showing off, and I was mean. I’m sorry I hurt your feelings."
Gerald looks at Billy, his expression softening into a warm smile.
"Thank you, Billy. That means a lot."
"So... are you going to be mad at me forever?"
"No. My mom says holding onto anger is too heavy. I forgive you, Billy."
"Awesome! Hey, I’m hungry. Is there any good grass around here?"
"The grass is okay... but the leaves up here are delicious."
Gerald stretches his neck high, plucks a juicy branch of leaves, and drops it to Billy, who chomps down gratefully.
Billy munches happily on the leaves, while Gerald stands beside him, both smiling. Leo strolls over, his eyes twinkling with pride.
"Now that is what I call a strong friendship."
The trio stands quietly, watching the colors of the sky and feeling the warmth of forgiveness and understanding. In the gentle hush, they realize that kindness makes everyone stronger.
