Emma took a deep breath, smoothing down her dress. "Today is going to be great," she whispered to herself, trying to ignore the fluttering in her stomach. Her mother poked her head through the door, offering an encouraging smile. "You'll do just fine, sweetheart, starting a new school is never easy." she reassured. Emma nodded, grabbing her backpack and heading out with determination.
Emma scanned the crowd, clutching her bag tightly. She spotted a group of kids her age and approached them hesitantly. A boy with a mischievous grin nudged his friend, gesturing towards Emma's glasses. "Hey, four-eyes, lost your way?" he taunted, sparking laughter from the group. Emma's cheeks flush with embarrassment, her eyes darting to the ground. Mia "I think your glasses look great, and they help you see better. Ignore them."
Emma slipped into a seat at the back, hoping to remain unnoticed. Her teacher, Ms. Thompson, began the lesson with a warm smile. Noticing Emma's discomfort, "If anyone needs help or has any questions, feel free to ask," she encouraged. During recess Emma spent time reflecting on her day, moments replaying in her mind. But she knew even though they picked on her their words don't define her.
Emma sat alone, picking at her food at lunch when Mia, a cheerful girl, approached her. "Mind if I join you, I saw what happened before?" she asked, setting her tray down. Emma nodded, grateful for the company. "I think we should stick together." "We are stronger together but words cannot hurt us," Mia said, her voice kind. Emma felt a flicker of hope, thankful for Mia's support.
With Mia by her side, Emma felt a newfound courage. When the bullies approached again, Emma took a deep breath. "It's not nice to tease people," she said firmly, her voice steady. Surprised, the bullies hesitated, unsure of how to respond. Mia stood beside Emma, ready to back her up. Emma realized the power of standing up for herself and others, feeling a sense of strength she hadn't known before.
Tommy, one of the bullies, approached Emma after class. "I'm sorry about earlier," he mumbled, looking down. Emma told Mia how she was surprised about Tommy, understanding that everyone has their own struggles. As Emma left school with Mia, she felt a sense of peace, knowing that kindness and empathy were her true shields against the world.
