Maya, a small girl with wide brown eyes and jet-black hair, clutched a faded teddy bear as she watched her new world with curiosity. Her adoptive mother, Sarah, knelt beside her, offering a gentle smile and an outstretched hand. The air was filled with the scent of fresh linen and the comforting hum of a lullaby playing softly in the background.
"Welcome home, Maya. This is your room now. I hope you’ll feel safe and happy here with me,"
Maya ran barefoot, her dress billowing as she darted past Sarah, who watched from the porch with a glass of lemonade. The scent of freshly mown grass and the distant hum of cicadas filled the air, while the sky blazed a brilliant blue.
"Mama, look! I can swing all by myself!"
"I see you, sweetheart! Higher and higher,"
Maya traced the faces of her birth family in faded pictures, her brow furrowed with questions. Sarah sat beside her, her hand resting gently on Maya's shoulder, understanding the longing in her daughter's eyes.
"Do you think they'll remember me, Mama? What if I don’t fit in there?"
"You’ll always belong, Maya. Sometimes, to find ourselves, we have to see where we came from. I’ll help you however I can,"
