Tres, a ten-year-old boy with a curious mind and a hopeful heart, watched from his porch. He longed to join the other kids, to be part of their world. "Maybe today will be different," Tres thought, pushing himself forward.
Marcus, a tall boy with a mischievous grin, waved him over. Jenny, bubbly and bright-eyed, smiled as she skipped around them. "Hey, Tres! You wanna hang out with us?" David, who seemed quieter, nodded from the sidelines.
"Let's see how brave you are," Marcus challenged, a smirk playing on his lips. "Yeah, if you want to be our friend, you have to do something daring," Jenny chimed in. Tres felt his heart race, unsure of what to do.
Tres sat on the edge of the sandbox, tears stinging his eyes. "Why do they treat me like this?" He whispered to himself, realizing that these were not the friendships he had hoped for.
Mr. Langley, the kindly librarian with a gentle smile, noticed Tres's downcast expression. "Looking for something special, Tres?" He asked, offering a book on friendship. Tres accepted it, grateful for the unexpected kindness.
"Hi, Tres! I saw you reading yesterday. Want to join our book club?" Sophie offered, her eyes sparkling with sincerity. Tres smiled, feeling the weight of loneliness lift. "I'd love to," he replied, understanding at last that true friends are those who accept you as you are.
