Kevin sat at the back, his eyes twinkling with mischief as he plotted his next move. Ms. Jewelle stood at the front, her presence commanding yet gentle, ready to begin her lesson on manners.
"Class, may I have your attention, please?" she asked, her voice steady but firm.
"Look, I'm a circus performer!" Kevin exclaimed, standing up with a flourish.
"Kevin, do you know why it's important to listen?" she inquired, kneeling to his level.
"So we don't miss the jokes?" he replied with a cheeky grin.
"Respect means understanding when it's time to listen and when it's time to laugh," she explained, her tone gentle but firm.
"I guess I never thought about it like that," Kevin admitted, his voice softer.
"Each of you brings something special to our class," Ms. Jewelle continued, smiling warmly. "But we learn best when we respect each other's time to shine."
Kevin approached Ms. Jewelle, a newfound respect in his eyes. "Thanks for the lesson, Ms. Jewelle. I'll try to remember it," he said earnestly.
"I'm proud of you, Kevin. Laughter is wonderful, but so is listening," she replied, her words heartfelt.
