Ms. Oughton glanced around her vibrant classroom, her heart warmed by the sight of bright-eyed children filtering in. Each child wiggled into their seat, excitement barely contained beneath their giggles and whispers. "Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to start something very special," she announced, her voice gentle yet filled with enthusiasm.
Liam, a boy with tousled brown hair and a penchant for questions, raised his hand eagerly. "What is it, Ms. Oughton?" he asked, unable to contain his curiosity. Ms. Oughton smiled, "We're going to have a Listening Circle. It's a place where each of you can share a story, and we all get to listen." The children exchanged excited glances, envisioning the stories they could tell.
"This is Mr. Fluffles," began Sophie, her voice a whisper at first. The room fell silent, save for a few whispers and giggles. Ms. Oughton gently reminded, "Remember, listening is as important as telling. Let's give Sophie our full attention." Encouraged, Sophie continued, sharing an adventure about Mr. Fluffles' journey to the moon.
Liam couldn't contain himself, "I have a story too!" he blurted out, forgetting the rule. Ms. Oughton nodded understandingly, "Thank you for your excitement, Liam. Let's wait until Sophie finishes, then it will be your turn." Liam nodded, understanding the importance of waiting his turn.
Liam finally had his turn, telling a thrilling tale about a pirate ship. The children listened intently, captivated by his animated retelling. Ms. Oughton watched with pride as her students learned the art of patience and the joy of listening to one another.
As the children prepared to leave, Ms. Oughton gathered them for a final thought. "Today, you've all shown how wonderful it is to share and listen. I hope you carry this with you, not just here, but everywhere you go." The children nodded, their hearts full of the day's adventures, promising to bring their stories and their listening ears back tomorrow.
