Linnea, a cheerful five-year-old girl with bright blue eyes and a head full of golden curls, clutches her stuffed polar bear as she gazes in awe at the new world around her. Her mother holds her hand tightly, guiding her past curious travelers and friendly airport staff. Suitcases rumble over tiled floors, and Linnea giggles as she spots a monkey peeking from a nearby tree. Everything feels different from her quiet Nordic home, and her heart beats faster with excitement.
Amal, a friendly five-year-old boy with curly black hair and an infectious grin, runs up to greet Linnea. His family welcomes the visitors with garlands and cool drinks, inviting them to join in their preparations. "Why are there so many flowers everywhere?" Linnea asks, her voice tinged with wonder. "It’s for the New Year! Flowers make the house happy and lucky," Amal explains, leading her by the hand.
Linnea and Amal kneel beside the lamp as Amal’s mother demonstrates how to light it for good luck. "You have to make a wish when you light it," Amal whispers, nudging Linnea. "I wish for lots of mangoes and a new friend," Linnea says with a giggle, her eyes shining with joy.
Linnea tries her hand at breaking a clay pot blindfolded, missing entirely and spinning in dizzy circles, while Amal cheers her on. "Why do we play these games?" she asks, pulling off her blindfold. "It’s to have fun and start the New Year laughing!" Amal replies, both of them collapsing in giggles on the grass.
Linnea peppers Amal with questions about every dish and custom. "Do you always eat with your hands? Why do you wash your feet before coming inside?" "It feels nice and clean! And food tastes better with fingers," Amal says, demonstrating with sticky, happy fingers. Linnea tries it herself, delighted by the new experience and the sweet, creamy taste.
Linnea hugs Amal tightly, promising to write letters and send pictures of snow. "Come back for next New Year! I’ll teach you to fly a kite even higher!" Amal calls as Linnea waves goodbye from the car window. As the road winds away, Linnea gazes out, her heart full of adventures, laughter, and the warmth of a new friendship.
